Tongans remain to this day very respectful for the elders and Lords and their churches. They are modest in their dress and have very close and supportive family ties. In respect of their beliefs, all shops are closed on Sunday however restaurants and cafés are open to service tourists from 11am to 9pm.

Tonga was first settled around 900BC and is composed of 176 islands divided into three main island groups, Tongan in the south, Ha’apai in the center and Vava’u and the Niuas in the north. Dutch navigators first discovered the north islands of Niua in 1616. Tongan islands were all united in 1845.

Traditionally fishing and farming crops were the major activities, however in recent years businesses have diversified with local products, accommodation, tourism and imported goods from overseas.
